APR 20, 2009 - Venus Disappears this Wednesday, and this site tells you where and when and why it happens. In brief, it's an occulation, caused by the Moon passing between Earth and Venus - blotting out the latter from our perspective. It happens early on the morning of the 22nd, if you're lucky enough to be in western North America. Elsewhere, you'll see the crescent Moon and Venus close together in the sky, but you'll miss the actual occultation. Even so, the predawn hours of the 22nd are still worth getting up for, thanks to the annual Lyrid meteor shower. The lunar crescent, brilliant Venus and falling stars: it's a combination to make you long for clear skies.
