JUL 10, 2006 - SNEWS is an acronym for the SuperNova Early Warning System, a project aimed at detecting the neutrinos that are precursors to one of those spectacular stellar explosions known as a supernova. The idea is that the arrival of such neutrinos, which precede the photons by which the supernova is seen, would alert astronomers so they could appropriately aim their instruments and capture images and data of the supernova from the outset. At the SNEWS site, you can sign up to get a real time alert of an impending supernova, which could make you one of the first to see such a rare phenomenon. (The SNEWS project focuses on galactic supernova, which happen only a few times per century on average.)
