NOV 7, 2005 - Volcanic Eruptions Tied to Lunar Cycle? is a National Geographic article that's several years old at this point, but it's worth a closer look regardless. In brief, the article describes volcano hunters Steve and Donna O'Meara's expedition to Stromboli, to test Steve's theory that volcanic eruptions are correlated with lunar cycles. "We're not saying that by simply following the moon we can predict when a volcano will erupt," Steve cautions. But he does advocate taking lunar factors into consideration in this regard. In the case of Stromboli, the O'Mearas found a spike in volcanic activity between full moon and the lunar perigee. Sounds awfully akin to astrology, doesn't it?
