OCT 3, 2005 - John Pratt's Astronomy is a fine introduction to astronomy, but it's more than that. You'd expect someone who teaches an astronomy class at UVSC (I'm guessing Utah Valley State College) to provide a good introduction to the subject, but Dr. Pratt goes beyond that. He's especially good at explaining the cycles of Mercury and Venus as seen in the heavens from our home planet; and in particular, illuminating Venus in a way that makes sense of Maya tradition. (See his articles on The Twenty Day Names and The Sacred Round for more in this regard; and don't miss his Calendars and Chronology section.)
