There are forty-one Gregorian calendar blue moons in the 20th Century, defined as the second of two consecutive full moons falling in the same month. They occur between the 30th and 31st of the month in the eighth to twelfth degrees of a (tropical zodiac) sign; i.e. from 7d 0m 1s to 11d 59m 59s, generally at intervals of 2-1/2 to 3 years. However three years in this century have two blue moons: 1915, 1961 and 1999.
Only four 20th Century blue moons are also lunar eclipses: March 31 1904, January 31 1915, December 30 1982 (the only total lunar eclipse, also a perigee lunation) and January 31 1999. A total of ten blue moons are perigee lunations - a lunation which occurs when the Moon is at or near (within 90% or greater) its closest approach to Earth.
The is the blue moon of song and folklore - the second in a pair of full moons in the same calendar month.
There are at this moment only about 6.7 million people now living who were born on the day of a blue moon.
